Learn How to Make Reading Meaningful for Your Students

Last updated 6 years ago

Reading plays an important role in a child’s education. That is why it is important for students to build a strong relationship with reading during elementary school. Teachers can promote a passion for reading by making reading meaningful for students. Use these teacher resources to make reading meaningful for your students this school year:

  • Make reading an interactive experience. Younger children enjoy vibrant pictures, creative stories, and fun voices for different characters. These are all elements that can be displayed during an interactive story time. Make sure to set aside time for reading every day. Gather students around and choose an engaging story. Encourage questions and comments from students and make sure everyone has a good view of you and the book. Try giving each character a unique voice to create a more entertaining experience!
  • Build connections between words. As you read to younger students, you will create relationships between words, images, and concepts. This is an important part of reading comprehension that helps children develop a love for this timeless hobby. Help children start building these associations by prompting them for words at different points throughout the story. Find pages with pictures that you can point to, and then ask students to tell you what each item is.
  • Encourage interpretation and deeper thought. Books may come to an end, but that doesn’t mean the story is over! One of the most exciting and rewarding parts of reading is being able to imagine what the characters may have done after the end of the story. It is also fun to question different choices and observations that are made by characters throughout the story, which is why it is important for children to develop interpretational and critical thinking skills in order to find reading meaningful. Ask students questions throughout the story and encourage a discussion at the end.

These tips will help you create a classroom full of passionate readers. If you want to find more elementary school lesson plan tips, you can contact the team here at Florida Citrus. Check out our teacher resources online or call us at (813) 379-2736!
